D-Blog Check In Day…Leave Comments On The Blogs You Read Today

by Leighann on July 22, 2013

I read a lot of diabetes blogs. A lot! That’s one of the reasons I was bummed when Google Reader shut down, because I could read them from my phone with a simple interface. But I have to admit that because I do a lot of reading using my phone or iPad, and not my actual computer, I probably don’t leave as many comments as I would like to. I will say that I favorite, or star, or bookmark a lot of posts.

Sometimes I really like a post, but I don’t feel like I have a good comment to leave. And then I feel bad because I really want to acknowledge the writer and his or her words.

Well, today that changes.

Chris Snider, who writes A Consequence of Hypoglycemia, came up with the idea of having a day that everyone who reads blogs can “check in.” So today, Monday July 22, every time you read a blog post, leave a comment. And even if you don’t have anything to add to the conversation, you can just write “check” in the comments. You don’t even have to leave your name, but you can sign in as anonymous.

I have always said that much of what I write, especially in the beginning, was for me…to get my thoughts and feelings out. But what I came to find was that my words and experiences often helped other parents coping with the same diabetes issues. And connecting online has helped me manage my child’s diabetes and my own mental health for sure. The Diabetes Online Community (DOC) is all about support and empowering others with knowledge.

And don’t for a second think that this “check in” day is about pandering for comments. Chris, who came up with the idea for says, dblogcheck is not about pageviews, it’s about building a stronger community through interaction.”

So go read blogs today. You can start by checking out my long list in the blogroll (and if your blog is not there, please fill out the form so I can add it!). And leave comments to let writers know you are here and listening.

You could even leave a comment for me. Please and thank you.

Best,

Leighann

#dblogcheck is going to lead to a very busy day. I think that I have lost control of all the blogs I read and this will be a fun day to touch base with everyone by reading and leaving comments.

I read and never comment, but I’m here commiserating. Yesterday was the first 24 hours in the 3 weeks we’ve been pumping (after 2 years MDI ) that we didn’t have any (or multiple) BG’s over 300. Here’s to not feeling alone 🙂

Yay! The insulin pump has been a great tool for us, too. Here’s to great blood sugars!

I never comment and I don’t know why! Is it too much work? I feel like a silent stalker just looking for important information to help survive my life with a 6 year old diabetic. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the post, Leighann. I’m also interested to see how it pans out… although at this point, seems very successful! I feel like you do, that I started just to vent and get my own thoughts out there, even much of the time writing something to figure out exactly WHAT I thought and felt on something. Interesting to see that evolve over time. Personally, I really enjoyed finding you as one of the first D-Mom blogs and giving me the ability to really see beyond my own diabetes, and look at everything from a different perspective in ways that I hadn’t really thought much about before. That’s a great power of the DOC, to bring all these voices together and to help us see all the different thoughts and feelings – and of course, the unity and support. Without a doubt. Thanks for doing what you do, not only here on the blog and in the community but as a D-Mom!

I used to read a lot on my phone, too, and hated trying to do comments so I ended up trying to remember to get on the computer at home and I’m sure you can figure out how well that went!
Then my phone decided it was stupid and couldn’t handle apps, so off reader went and I had a hard time for a while trying to get back into reading and blogging.
So glad Chris thought of this because ever since he mentioned it, I’ve been reconnecting and am SO glad I am!
Amazing how much you really miss out when you aren’t connected!!
