Goody Bag

Goody BagLong before our daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, we began handing out Play-Doh on Halloween night and to preschool friends as an alternative to candy.

Each year we co-host a Halloween bash for my coworkers and their families. We have a bonfire. We have a flashlight costume parade. And there is a costume contest. And believe me, the competition is fierce.

The reality is that every kid wins a category. I walk around with my clipboard throughout the evening trying to come up with the categories. I try to be witty and creative.

The kids dig the costume contest and I hear year after year from the other parents that the kids wonder as they get decked out what category they will win in.

One by one (youngest to oldest), the kids come forward to receive their certificate and get their prize: the coveted goody bag.

And you know what? The candy is never missed. Not by any of the kids. It’s all about the trinkets and bouncy eyeballs!

Goody Bag

She loves the party preparation as much as I do and always helps prepare the goody bags, stuffing them with "one of each."

(Those are my new barstools that I didn’t tell you about on No D-Day.)
