Leighann Calentine’s daughter “Q” was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of three in 2008. As a seasoned blogger, Leighann began sharing their family’s story online, quickly becoming a go-to source of information and support to other families with a diabetic child. D-Mom Blog is frequently included among top diabetes blogs and online resources.

In 2012, Spry published her book Kids First, Diabetes Second: tips for parenting a child with type 1 diabetes. While families are educated by their medical care team in the basics of diabetes care, this book fills the gaps showing families that their children can have happy lives despite their medical condition. The book is filled with tips and personal experiences on everything from navigating the school system, play dates and sleep overs, sick days, teen years, travel, and of course cooking.

Leighann is an active member of the diabetes online community and has a large following on D-Mom Blog, Twitter, and Facebook. She is a mentor to other families and is a diabetes and health advocate.

Leighann is currently seeking freelance writing projects and is also available for social media consulting and speaking engagements. Leighann can write on a number of topics including, but not limited to, parenting a child with a chronic medical condition, type 1 diabetes, and food allergies.

Leighann holds a Master’s degree and has over a decade of experience in the academic setting researching and writing. She has an eye for detail and enjoys proofreading, editing, and co-writing.

Leighann is available for travel both within the US and internationally.
