Pez, Oh Yes, We Have Santa Pez

by Leighann on December 21, 2010

Santa PezSo last year Q’s grandmother wanted to give her Pez. I said no because it was just more sugar to have to keep her from over consuming.

But I bet everyone reading this got Pez in their stocking as a child. Oh, the characters! Oh, the little tablets of pure sugar that tasted like absolutely nothing but for some reason were so fun to eat. Tilt your head back Santa, give me another piece!

So as I was shopping for stocking stuffers I came across the display of Pez and actually turned over the package and read the label.

One roll has 9 grams of carbs. One whole entire roll.

Each roll has 12 pieces. That’s 0.75 grams of carbs each piece.

And they are gluten free, for those who can’t have gluten.

Pez Nutrition

Has anyone EVER cleaned the dispenser before use? Nope, me neither.

I know you are beginning to think that I’m cramming sugar down Q’s throat this holiday season, but the reality is that I realized this year that she can partake in advent calendar chocolates, and candy canes, and yes, Pez, and it’s not going to break the carb bank or require a Huge A$$ Bolus (HAB)TM.

My husband collects pez… needless to say we have tonnes of the candy sitting in bags, just waiting for the day that Elise is old enough to use them for lows (I think they still might be a little to hard for her to eat).

Anyone in need of pez candy?

I saw the Thomas Pez tin on their website and had to quickly close my laptop. Heaven forbid my Thomas-obsessed 3yo see it and *need* it! Maybe for his birthday.

The Snow White set is very cute. I saw it at Target. Might be a great one for Elise 🙂

What’s your husband’s all time favorite Pez dispenser?

I have always loved PEZ, and could not wait until the kids were old enough to get them in their stockings. I very rarely gave them candy or sweets, but PEZ is a little party in a fun container, so I was very excited to see their faces at this special treat. Of course, the first year I bought them, my daughter, LuLu was diagnosed with Type 1. Two nights after she was diagnosed, she was back in the hospital with a stomach virus. So, we officially got out of the hospital Christmas Eve. I will never forget trying to act like I was in the Christmas spirit for the kids, but inside I was drowning in fear at this new diagnosis. The kids did not get the PEZ in their stockings that year. That was two years ago. A few nights ago I came across those same Santa Pez mixed in with some wrapping paper supplies. I started crying my eyes out at the thought of where we were this time two years ago. And then, I had a moment of damn the diabetes, they are getting the Santa Pez in their stockings this year. We have come so far in two years, and the little Santa Pez is kind of like a little trophy for us this year. I, too, checked the carb count and thought, 9 carbs, who knew? LuLu is going to be so excited, and I will have a full-circle moment. Diabetes sucks, but it will not suck the joy out of this sweet childhood Christmas morning moment. Merry Santa Pez Christmas to all!

I know exactly how you feel!

I had a moment over hot cocoa that made me so sad. Hot cocoa. But now we are equipped to handle the situation.

I remember one of my first thoughts being that she couldn’t bake Christmas cookies with Grandma anymore or lick the bowl. It’s their tradition to bake together each Christmas Eve. But you know what? They have baked every year since her diagnosis.

I think for all of us our first thoughts are about what we will have to deny our kids. And then as we gain knowledge and confidence, we realize that we can figure out a way to include such treats in their lives.

I hope Lulu delights in her Pez! I know Q will.

Pez, FTW!
