Smaller Pods Are Finally FDA Approved!

by Leighann on December 14, 2012

I know many of you have been saying, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” But Insulet announced FDA approval of the new smaller pods today. Existing customers may have them in their hands as early as late February or March!

(Did you just hear angels singing?!)

We are satisfied with the OmniPod system the way it is, but we’ve been looking forward to the smaller pods–I have a skinny eight-year-old after all–and the five foot range of the new PDM.

Here are a few photos for size comparison:

Stephanie Marks, on behalf of Insulet, told me today, “Since it’s going to take a few months (until) people get their hands on the new system, we’re trying to get the message out that the current system already has tremendous benefits, so there’s no reason for people to wait…Upgrading to the new system will be EASY…the company will reach out to customers when it’s time for them to transition.”

From Insulet’s OmniPod website:

“The new OmniPod System, comprised of a smaller Pod and an updated PDM, has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This means Insulet can begin manufacturing and selling the new OmniPod in the U.S. The new OmniPod insulin pump is more than one-third smaller and one-quarter lighter than the original model, while maintaining the same 200-unit insulin reservoir capacity and easy-to-use features.

Getting Ready to Transition

We are currently preparing for the transition to the new OmniPod System. This includes working with healthcare professionals, distributors and other essential partners to ensure a seamless conversion for all patients and their support system. Based on these initiatives, we expect to begin shipping the new System between late February and end of March 2013.

Don’t Worry; We’ll Reach out to You

If you are currently an OmniPod wearer, you don’t have to do anything right now. We will reach out to you when it’s time for you to convert to the new OmniPod and give you all the information you’ll need. Converting to the new OmniPod will be EASY! And you can be confident that we’ll give you plenty of notice before your new OmniPod is shipped.”

*OmniPod disclosure: We are long time customers. We pay for our own OmniPod supplies. However I do write for their Suite D blog.

I’m so happy for you! The older Omni has a large footprint on a little eight year old body. This is so much better. And it took so long, I had almost written Omni ‘s smaller pod off. Hope you don’t have too long a wait before you get one.
