{Sunday Survey} D-Kids Facetime

by Leighann on July 10, 2011

Last week I asked:

How often do you get to talk face to face with another parent of a child with diabetes?

This week I have a question about how often your d-kid gets to interact with other d-kids.

We recently attended a JDRF Family Day at an amusement park. The trip was 150 miles from home and we just happened to meet a family that lives two miles from us. Their child has only recently been diagnosed. Since meeting, we’ve had one playdate together. The kids just played as kids do, but the mom and I chatted.

Q has a friend in her school that she adores, but unfortunately she’ll be moving along to middle school in the fall. She also has a cousin, but we don’t see him very often.

So my question this week is:

How often does your d-kid get to interact with another child with diabetes?

D-Kid Facetime

According to the poll, the majority of d-kids see other kids with diabetes once every few months. I’d love for you to leave a comment about the importance of d-kids meeting other kids like them. How do you find other d-kids to interact with?

Have an idea for a Sunday Survey? Please let me know.

Having siblings with diabetes means they get to talk to another every day. But I answered your poll with once =every few months, as that’s when they get contact with kids from other families with diabetes.

Four times a year, all at Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi functions. No other D-kids at school or church. She doesn’t seem to mind.

My family was blessed with meeting another D family only a few weeks after dx. Our girls are close in age & have become very good friends. They live 3 hrs away so we don’t get to see them as often as we’d like, but the relationship the 2 girls have is amazing, & I’m so thankful. There are 4 other kids with T1 at my dd’s middle school but she only sees them if they’re in the nurse’s clinic when she goes.

About once a year, but the good news…TODAY is the start of that once a year. Getting the last bit packed for Camp Granada! My daughter is bouncing with excitement.

It is usually once a month and I know M would love it if it were more. We also have MoD lunches about every other month. M loves her D friends. I help run our outreach in our area and try and have something every month depending on age. We have family events, teen events, adult meet ups and just had our first grandparent meet up. We also do education like 504 and research meetings. I would love to gove more info and help you get your JDRf office to help families reach each other.

We are hoping to make some connections now that Bean has gone to camp so that she can be around more kids more often.

We are extremely thankful for Clara Barton Camp. Our 12 yo daughter LOVES it, and they run programs throughout the year as well as summer camp ( both sleep away and day camps). After each session she returns rejuvenated and better able to care for herself.
No other T1’s at school, support group only meets 4 x yr, but she goes eagerly… Know one other family, but he girls didn’t really click. Know several seasoned D moms with older & grown up children who are fountains of info and support and though I don’t rely on them as much any more, I am sure I will be as the teen years are approaching fast!!!
