{Sunday Survey} The Dreaded A1C

by Leighann on June 12, 2011

Last week I asked:

How far is your one-way trip to the endo?

This week I have a question about your child’s A1c.

I come away from some endo appointments feeling a bit triumphant if I’ve managed to get Q’s A1c down…or held it steady. But it’s so deflating when it goes up. Sometimes we can blame growth hormones, or illness. But sometimes us D-Moms and D-Dads feel like we’ve done everything we humanly can and we still don’t like the number that comes up.

At the endocrinologist this month, Q’s A1c held steady at a number that I wasn’t happy with. I’m not sure what to do to bring it down. And the nurse practitioner we saw was not very much of a help, but that’s a post for another day!

All I know if that it’s sometimes good to see what other A1c’s are because you see that you are not alone.

So my question this week is:

What was your child’s most recent A1c?

A1C Survey Results

From the responses, it looks like about 50% of d-kids (who’s moms and dads read D-Mom Blog) have A1c’s between 7 and 8. I know that our endocrinologist recommends that our six-year-old have an A1c under 8.0. Not that we are ever always in that range!

I’d love for you to leave a comment telling me how you feel when you hear your child’s A1c. And you’ll have to see the next Sunday Survey question that this week’s topic prompted.

Have an idea for a Sunday Survey? Please let me know.

I definitely feel like Sarah’s A1C is a reflection on how well I help her manage diabetes. She’s been consistently between 6.5 – 7.2, which is pretty good, but when I see an increased number I get all OCD trying to figure out what we did differently and what it means. I think her A1C has climbed a bit since we started using the Dexcom because we’re catching lows faster – which is a good thing! But I still don’t like seeing the numbers creeping up.

Bean’s last A1C was 8.8 which was a full point down from her previous one. We totally did a happy dance when the number popped up!
As much as I don’t want it to be, I feel like it’s a measure of how well I’m doing as a stand in pancreas. I know that there’s only so much I can do, can control, and D doesn’t always play by the rules…but it’s really hard not to feel judged by that number!

I need to do this twice as I have 2 kids with diabetes with different Ac1s. But your poll is a single answer only.

At our last appointment
pumping 7yo got under 7
MDI 5yo got under 8

we go for our next test on Thursday ….

Angela- I just changed the settings to allow multiple answers per computer, so hopefully it will allow you to answer again.

Thanks for playing along!

7.9 this time, 7.8 three months ago…. and the Endo is happy with that. Our Endo believes that 7.5-8.0 is the perfect range for right now, with consideration of some other health issues, so we’re aiming at staying in that range. I’d really like to get it down a little lower, myself, but we’ll see what happens.
