I’m not familiar with rapper Layzie Bone, but he’s in the news for helping assist a motorist who, driving erratically, wrecked his vehicle. The driver was having a severe low blood sugar. Layzie Bone and other people on the scene fed the guy apples and oranges until EMS could help.
I have two thoughts on this:
1. It is very, very important to check blood sugar before driving. As the officer in the video states, a person driving while having a low blood sugar resembles the poor driving of someone driving while intoxicated. It is dangerous and can be deadly, not only for the driver, but for other people on the road. I know we will instill the message to test before driving to Q when she starts driving in a few years.
2. This isn’t really important to the story, but I find it odd that I have never heard a person with diabetes or their caregiver refer to a severe low blood sugar as “diabetic shock.” I have only heard this term in the media. Don’t you find that term odd? Maybe it’s just me. (And don’t get me started on media always saying “suffers from diabetes,” which is an op-ed for another day!)
