Recently I asked Q to go wash her hands as I finished up making lunch. Before I knew it she had washed her hands and checked her own blood sugar and announced the number.
All by herself.
I’ve been telling teachers and caretakers for quite some time that if they have difficulties or can’t remember how to do it, just ask Q. She can walk you through it.
I often ask her to coach me through the process in anticipation of her taking on the task herself.
I’ve been saying for some time that it takes too much coordination for a young person like her to get the blood onto the test strip precisely so, but our new FreeStyle test strips I think make it a lot easier.
Ever since this day, she’s been doing all of her own blood glucose checks (except for the ones I sneak in while she’s sleeping).
When I announced on Twitter that she had done her own check, she got a round of “atta girls” and “tell her we are proud of her.” When I told her that the DOC was cheering for her she asked if anyone was going to send her a picture with a thumbs up. So here you have it, the awesome DOC, our biggest cheerleaders!
