Type 1 Tuesday

Here are some tidbits that I have found interesting and wanted to share…

Sleep, Elusive Sleep

I don’t have to tell you that one of the worst parts of having a child with type 1 diabetes is the sleepless nights. Just the other night I managed to be in bed. asleep. before 10:00 pm. and wouldn’t you know the Dexcom alarmed every 15 minutes because Q’s blood sugar was low and just didn’t want to come up. According to this article, the lack of sleep really is taking a toll on us.

I didn’t have the fortitude to participate in Diabetes Blog Week this year, but head on over to Bitter~Sweet for the links to everyone who did.

Emily McDowellBest. Cards. Ever.

I had seen these cards making their rounds and they are so popular among people with different medical conditions that they even made it to NPR.

Read “Are You Sick, And Sick Of Hearing ‘Everything Happens For A Reason’?” on NPR to learn more about the cards, but visit Emily McDowell’s website to see the actual cards and order them.

Excluding Kids At School

There are so many kids who are excluded during school celebrations and events because they have special dietary needs. “However, it’s easy to be in compliance with school wellness policies, and to include children with diabetes, celiac disease and other special dietary needs when celebrations do not center around food.” This article is from a food allergy magazine, but it could just as easily be about diabetes.

High School Athletes

Here is a nice article about kids with diabetes playing a variety of high school sports. “Parents and kids with diabetes are unafraid of competitive sports, as they may have been 20 years ago, he adds. “People have realized diabetes isn’t a debilitating thing, you can still remain very active.””
