Alternate title: Crying Fowl(er)
In an attempt to defy Wendell Fowler’s ignorance when he espoused the theory that an ice cream social to raise money for a camp for children with type 1 diabetes was the crime of the century, we, along with our DOC friends decided to raise our spoons to Wendell and have a cup!
Because she can eat that!
But my efforts were thwarted by my type 1 child with good eating habits. The first night, both kids requested fresh fruit salad for dessert. The second night, they chose a popsicle made from kefir and blueberries. But on the third day we visited a local petting farm and hit one of the frozen custard spots in town.
No children with type 1 diabetes were harmed in the production of this blog post.
Michael Hoskins of The Diabetic’s Corner Booth Ice Cream for Diabetes
Michael has several posts about the two newspaper articles and is personally involved with the group attacked. I didn’t want to go into all of the background, but basically Wendell Fowler wrote a scathing newspaper article about why people with diabetes shouldn’t eat ice cream and why it is wrong that a group raising money for a camp for children with type 1 diabetes shouldn’t have an ice cream social. He did absolutely no research and his accusations were baseless. A follow up article by the paper’s editor did nothing to resolve the issue or apologize for disseminating misinformation. And the newspaper deleted the many comments by educated and informed people affected by diabetes who opposed his views.
