(My daughter starts kindergarten at the end of the week. I’m not entirely sure how that happened so quickly! In the spirit of back-to-school, I’ll post a few tips that I’m trying out.)
In the past my daughter has attended half day preschool. This year she’ll be in all day kindergarten.
The morning scramble will have the added pressure of a packed lunch. To make things more tedious, I will have to include an inventory of foods that I include and their carb counts so that the nurse can calculate her insulin bolus at lunchtime.
I worry about silly things. Will someone help her put the straw in her drink? Or open a container? Or pack up the remnants without throwing away her cloth napkin?
Since she’s never had to tote her lunch before, I figured a dry run would be a good idea. And it’s a good idea for me to have a dry run at actually prepping her lunch each morning or the night before.
So a couple of times this week I will pack her lunch, even though she will dine at home. I hope that it will get her used to opening and closing her lunch box all by herself and will get me used to actually packing it.
Lord knows I have so much on my mind that I can’t possibly think that far ahead.
But I am going to give it a try!
What type of lunchbox does your child use? Do you have any tips for preparing school lunches? Favorite foods to include, particularly vegetarian ones?
Updated to add: As I reread this checking for typos, I realized that I must seem pretty put together. I actually don’t want you to think for one second that I have got my ducks in a row as far as starting school is concerned. Practicing for lunchtime this week is a goal. In reality, she may go to school the first day with her lunch packed in plastic baggies. Oh, the horror!
