This month marked 11 years that Q has lived with type 1 diabetes. Eleven. Years. She has now lived 75% of her lifetime with diabetes. We marked the day with cupcakes, of course. Cupcakes are totally bolus-worthy!
Conservatively she’s done:
- 24,102+ finger pricks and blood sugar checks
- 4,400+ insulin injections
- 1339+ insulin pump changes
- A gazillion juice boxes and Smarties to treat low blood sugars
Q thrives despite diabetes. Since she was diagnosed at such a young age (just before turning 4), I will never know if diabetes shaped her personality. She is a driven, compassionate young woman who has taken on the challenge of diabetes self-management so that she can have freedoms and experiences like her non-diabetic peers.
Here’s to 11 years of living, and living well, with diabetes!
Read an excerpt from my book Kids First, Diabetes Second describing why it’s important to celebrate diabetes.
Heck yes, I always bolus for cupcakes.
